Innovation Spotlight: Partnering with Biotech Heights to Advance On-Farm Protein Production
At Dapibuset, we believe the future of protein starts on the farm. And thanks to our partnership with Biotech Heights, we’re bringing that vision closer to reality.
Biotech Heights is a national hub for bioprocessing innovation in Sweden, supporting startups, researchers, and industry in developing next-generation fermentation and biotechnology solutions. For us, this collaboration has provided valuable access to cutting-edge lab facilities, expert networks, and a supportive innovation environmentthat helps us accelerate our R&D and scale our work.
As part of this collaboration, Biotech Heights recently published an article highlighting our partnership and shared efforts to to make protein production more sustainable, resilient, and accessible. The piece explores how our on-farm fermentation technology enables farmers to upcycle local crops and byproducts into high-protein feed—reducing reliance on imported soy and industrial supply chains.
Highlights from the Feature Article
- Empowering farmers – Enabling on-farm production of high-protein feed using existing agricultural resources.
- Biotech in action – Transforming local crops and by-products into nutrient-rich feed and reducing reliance on external inputs.
- Sustainable solutions – Using fermentation to create efficient, cost-effective alternatives to soy-based feed.
We are incredibly grateful – and more motivated than ever to keep going!
Why it matters?
The global animal feed industry depends heavily on imported soy—a crop linked to high levels of deforestation, soil depletion, and supply chain volatility. At Dapibuset, we’re addressing this challenge with a system that uses fungal fermentation to upgrade local crops and agricultural byproducts—like wheat—into protein-rich feed that can be produced directly on farms.
By shifting feed production closer to the source, we reduce environmental impact and strengthen local food system resilience.
What We’re Working On
- Developing small-scale bioreactors that allow farmers to ferment high-protein feed directly on-site—cutting costs, transport, and supply chain steps
- Continuous R&D to improve feed quality—including increasing protein content and optimizing the amino acid profile for better nutritional performance—as well as improving the scalability of our technology.
- Replacing or supplementing imported soy with upcycled wheat and other crops, increasing the value of existing harvests by up to 30%
- Partnering with Lund University and SLU to test microbial performance and feed digestibility
- Exploring potential applications of our product in food ingredients—taking fermentation from feed to fork
“By optimizing the use of what is already available on farms, we aim to offer a more cost-effective and resilient way to produce animal feed.”
